KANSAS CITY, Mo. April XX, 2016 — QM Power, the only current manufacturer of a new class of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs), today announced that an independent report recently published to the Emerging Technologies Coordinating Council (ETCC), a consortium of California utilities, found that PMSMs achieved 37% more energy savings than Electronically Commutated Motors (ECMs) for testing customer site.
The study was conducted by Alternative Energy Systems Consulting (AESC) and prepared for a Southern California utility to determine the energy savings and demand reduction of PMSMs. Following a field trial with 173 9-12W fan motor retrofits at a San Diego supermarket, each fan motor demonstrated a savings of 73.6 kWh per year relative to the baseline of ECMs, and reduced demand by 8.5W.
The report states: “The 173 fan retrofits showed clear and consistent improvements in power factor and consumption without negatively impacting case operation.”
The report executive summary concludes: “With an idealized 100% market penetration of the 9-12W model, extrapolation to the California retail food segment suggests the statewide savings potential of this technology is 189 GWh site energy, 17.2 MW demand reduction, and 66,540 metric tons of annual CO2 emissions. The effectiveness, market potential, and ease of replacement suggest that this technology should be considered for further study or immediate rebate program inclusion.”
QM Power President and CEO, P.J. Piper noted: “We are excited to see these continuing independent reports confirming the significant efficiency gains and dramatic cost reductions achieved by QM Power’s more reliable innovative new Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor technology. Given that the QM Power’s PMSM is a drop-in replacement for an ECM at same upfront cost, there is no reason not to make the switch today. End users, contractors, OEMs, distributors, wholesalers and utilities are rapidly preparing for and implementing this next generation of motors to replace the incumbent ECM, PSC and shaded pole solutions.”
QM Power’s breakthrough motor technology is the biggest innovation in motor design in more than 50 years, and has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as a “High Impact Technology.” The DOE and Oak Ridge National Laboratory previously documented results from a DOE demonstration site with considerable savings. The report also noted that a broader upgrade of QM Power PMSMs to applications beyond commercial refrigeration could reduce source energy consumption by as much as 300 billion kilowatt–hours or more, with proportional environmental benefits.
